Picking The Best Welder For Beginners – Buying Guide 2016!

Best Welder For BeginnersWhen I say the word “welding”, most people will have mixed emotions.  They will either be a little nervous because of their lack of experience on the subject or they will be incredibly excited about the topic.

It seems like only a small percentage of people have much experience with welders, and I understand that it can be a daunting topic if you don’t have much experience.  However, I have been in your shoes before, and I am here to help you purchase your first welder!  That is why I have created this post about picking the best welder for beginners!

What Are Welders Used For?

Welding is the process of joining two different materials (usually metals or thermoplastics) together by using fusion to combine the two separate materials into one.  Welding can be considered one of the most fundamental skills used by many different kinds of mechanics and engineers around the world.

So without welders it is nearly impossible to combine two pieces of metal, wire, or other weldable materials.

Welders are incredibly important for everyone who works in construction, engineering or anyone who likes to work on hobbies at home.

What Are The Different Types Of Welders?

There are multiple different styles of welding that you will see throughout different industries and each one has their pros and cons, but in the end they are all relatively simple and produce the same outcome.

Gas Metal Arc Welder For BeginnersThe most common type of welder used is the Gas Metal Arc Welder or Metal Inert Gas (MIG).  The MIG welder uses shielded gas to heat up the two metals until they are hot enough to form together.  This type of welder is one of the best welders for beginners because it is simple to use and only requires a constant power source which is pretty easy to obtain.

Most people who do any type of welding in their garage, use these types of welders.

Shielded Metal Arc Welder For Beginners

The second most common type of welder is the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) which is a form of stick welding and uses a powerful electric current to combine the two pieces of metal together.  This type of welder is used by many people, mostly for large sections of metal.  This is one of the intermediate level welders and isn’t the best welder for beginners but isn’t too complex for an enthusiastic novice to pick up in no time!

I definitely recommend a SMAW welder if you are a little more experienced with welders, and you have a good amount of metalwork you want to get done.

Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welder for Beginners

The third type of welder that I will be talking about is the Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welding (GTAW/TIG) which is is an industrial level welder that uses tungsten electrodes to weld the two pieces of metal together.  This is by far the most complex type of welder and It is definitely not the best welder for beginners.

That being said, if you are open to spending some money, and spending some time experimenting, these Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welders are extremely useful if you have a lot of work to do.

The Best Welder For Beginners:

Collection of Multimeter Tips and Tricks #1

Hello Everyone, I have been recently gathering together some tips and tricks for multimeters that I think will be beneficial to you guys!  I found this video online and it really covered some great tips.  I have added the video below for all of you guys to check out!

I hope you enjoy it, remember to always be safe with your multimeter!  These tips will make your job measuring a whole lot easier, and it might even teach you a few functions of a multimeter that you didn’t know you could do!

I definitely suggest you take some of these multimeter tips to heart, they will help you save some time and even keep safe!

How To Use a Multimeter!

How to use a multimeter

Here is the layout of the general multimeter.

Multimeters can be incredibly useful and a vital tool to many people.  But they won’t do you any good if you don’t know how to use them!  I have been in the contracting and construction field for nearly my entire working career.  I have used quite a few different types of multimeters and electric testers in general.  Because of this, I have learned the ropes, and I am here to explain how to use a multimeter as easily and as safely as possible!

A multimeter does three simple functions; it measures electric currents called amperes,  it measures resistance measured in ohmmeters, and voltages measures in volts.  Although these all may sound pretty similar, each of these functions have their own specific settings that need to be used to measure accurately.

Safety:

Before jumping into using your multimeter, you need to be extremely careful.  You are dealing with live electricity and it can be extremely dangerous.  So be sure to make sure to check your multimeters conduct measurements and make sure you don’t exceed these measurements when you are dealing with live currents.

Resistance:

Resistance is measured in Ohms which is represented by the symbol Ω.  Before you try to measure the resistance of any electronic, you will need to disconnect the wiring and power of what you are measuring.  This will keep you safe from any live currents that could otherwise harm you.

From there will you have to change your multimeter settings to the Ohms or Resistance setting.  Generally this is done with a dial, or maybe a button if you don’t have a dial on your multimeter.  From there you will have to take your red lead and connect it to the port symboled VΩ, and the black lead to the common port. Now all you have to do is connect the red and black leads to the circuit you are trying to measure.  From there you should be displayed with your measurements on the screen.

Current:

Current can be extremely dangerous when you are measuring it, because you are exposed to an open circuit.  Generally the standard safety rating for a current is at 300mA.

To measure current, you will have to set the multimeter to the ammeter function or current function depending how it is labeled on your multimeter.  Then you will set up the terminal leads similar to how you set them up with measuring resistance.  From there you will attach the lead to the circuit and the other to the open points in the circuit.  You will then be displayed with the results in the form of amps.

The great thing about multimeters is there functionality.  They are really combination of tools, and if you own one you don’t have to carry all these different tools with you.  Although they are great tools, I suggest you be careful with them, and make sure you take all the safety precautions available.  Overall, if you learn how to use these multimeters effectively, it will make a lot of home repairs and on the job repairs a whole lot easier!
